Biodiesel MSDS: A safety guide to prevent accidents

A biodiesel MSDS or biodiesel material data sheet is a form containing a data regarding the properties of a biodiesel. An MSDS for biodiesel may include the list of hazardous ingredient of chemicals that is in a biodiesel. It should also provide the fire explosive hazards of its chemical substance.

In a biodiesel MSDS it should identify each chemical’s manufacturer, their address, emergency telephone numbers and the date it was prepared.

A material safety data sheet is commonly used system for cataloging information on certain chemicals such as what a biodiesel is made from. It should inform the reader instruction for the safe use of the biofuel and the potential hazards associated in it.

Biodiesel MSDS may be divided into parts. Biodiesel MSDS sheet should include the name of the biofuel; for example the general product name is biodiesel (B100) should appear on the biodiesel MSDS, its synonyms and the product description. It should identify each substance by its physical properties for example; color, odor, appearance, its boiling point, freezing point, etc.

The biodiesel fuel MSDS should identify the composition and information on ingredients on the biofuel. It should identify all hazardous ingredients if any.

Chemical properties should be specified as to possible reactions with other substance. Provide information about the fire and explosive hazards of chemical substance. Potential health effects should also appear on the material safety data sheet. For example, what would be the effect of B100 if it is inhaled by a person, would it cause any eye irritation, when it is accidentally had a contact with the skin and even if it is ingested.

First aid measures should appear also and proper guide if any accidents happened. It should include health hazard information such as effects of over exposure and any necessary first aid treatment. List any protective equipment necessary while working with the material. What would be the effect from the exposure from the biodiesel and personal protection should be stated, like if vapors are generated wear an approved organic vapor or mist respirator.

Handling and proper storage of the biodiesel should be included. It must identify the proper storage of it like storing it in a close container between 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It should be kept away from oxidizing agents, excessive heat and ignition sources because it is highly flammable. It may include if necessary, instruction for long-term storage or handling of the biodiesel.

How the biodiesel should be transport should include in the sheet. Regulation information may vary from the country of the product which the biodiesel will be transport. The reactivity and stability of the biodiesel concludes, in general, that the end-product is hazardous and stable. Polymenrization will not transpire. It should elude robust oxidizing agents and combustion from biodiesel yields carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide together with thick smoke.
