Here’s how geothermal heat pump works ;

Heat pumps that are installed in many homes acts like a ‘collector’ of the Earth’s natural heat. These pumps get into action during the colder months of the year, and collect the natural heat under the ground through the series of pipes or loop. The loop of pipes is installed just below the surface, and in some cases if the area permits the loop is installed and submerged under a lake.

The geothermal ground loops are usually constructed from polyethylene pipes. The pipes are filled with water or anti-freeze. The loop acts as the geothermal heat exchangers as the water is circulated, and in the process extracts and dumps heat in the ground thus cooling the house. The ductwork is present, and this is the one tasked to distribute the heat in the different rooms inside the house.

The loop system will then draw the excess heat from different rooms inside the house and this will be absorbed by the Earth. The process effectively cools the house as less heat is present.

The consumption during heating cycles is lower by 25-50 percent, and the consumption during cooling cycles is lower by as much as 25-30 percent.
