The Essence of the Wind Speed Meter

A Wind Speed Meter Should Be Set Up First
Before you can start building your own wind-powered home generator, you would have to set up a wind speed anemometer first. This is a very important component of your power generator because, without it, you would not be able to assess accurately if your place has the right amount of wind to harness from. After all, the wind has to be at a certain speed regularly in order to get enough power to satisfy your needs. To measure wind speed, the wind vane anemometer is an indispensable part of the system.
Aside from providing you with the data you need in making the decisions for your generator, the wind speed meter also serves another important purpose: early warning for oncoming foul weather. In tornado prone areas, they install wind vanes at their homes to warn them of incoming storms and tornadoes by showing people how strong the wind is at a certain time.
Considerations in Setting Up a Wind Speed Meter
Because a wind speed measurement system needs to be very accurate, care should be taken in choosing the materials needed for your wind speed anemometer:
• As much as possible, you should buy those with jewel bearings on the fan’s mount. This makes your wind speed indicator more sensitive to changes and thus make your wind speed measurement system more accurate.
• Include infrared sensors in the setup. These have fast become cheap and more available.
• Install a display panel so you can see the measurements of your wind speed.
Finally, the location is important. Where you put your wind anemometer is crucial to measuring the wind speed in your location. If there are obstructions in your area like other buildings, trees, and such, you need to be able to put your meter in a place where it is exposed to the most wind. It should be put at an elevated position.
Putting It Up
Now you are ready to put up your wind vane anemometer. First, you have to make sure that your wind mast is truly vertical. This will make certain that the mast is strong enough to hold against sudden changes in wind. Second, keep the wind vane pointed to true north through the use of a compass. Connect it to the necessary peripherals and you’re done.
Take note that at altitudes you would be getting anomalous readings. You’d have to know about air density vs altitude and may have to install an air density gauge to offset the errors of your meter.
