Horizontal Axis Windmills

In a horizontal axis setup, the main rotor shaft and the electric generator is located on top of the tower and is pointed towards the wind. Vertical Axis Windmills

In this setup, the main rotor shaft is in a vertical position. In this type of vertical windmill, the blades do not have to be pointed to the direction of the wind for it to produce wind energy. However, this arrangement also caused some limitations; for one thing, wind energy and rotational speed is low, even though the torque is high. This also means the process requires more force and is not that cost-effective when you need to produce a lot of energy.
The advantage, however, is that the gearbox and generator can be located on the ground, so a vertical axis windmill does not require the construction of a tower. This also makes maintenance easier.
